Up Close and Personal: 1942 Rose Bowl

By George Edmonston Jr.

Valuable 1942 Rose Bowl collection presented to OSU Alumni Association

As many OSU alumni are aware, Oregon State University made its first Rose Bowl appearance in 1942 (after the 1941 season), defeating heavily-favored Duke University, 20-16, in the only Rose Bowl game yet played outside the city of Pasadena, Calif.

Known to sports historians as the "Displaced Rose Bowl," the game was moved to Duke's campus in Durham, N.C., because of the West Coast blackout that followed the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Now, thanks to a recent gift from OSU alumnus Tom Stevens, '80, to OSUAA's membership director, Erin Haynes, new light has been shed on just what it must have been like to have been a part of the Beaver contingent making that historic trip so long ago.

The gift, a scrapbook put together by Bob Panagis, a member of the '42 team (now living in Sun City, AZ.) and Stevens' uncle, chronicles the experience of both the historic game as well as the trip there and back. Receiving the valuable archive from Panagis within the past year, Stevens, who lettered in football at OSU from 1977-79, had possession of the scrapbook until the week of May 10-15, at which time he met with Haynes in Crockett, Calif., to transfer ownership to the Association.

"I am bowled over by the quality of the items and the organization of the scrapbook," said Haynes "Bob saved everything, including game tickets, train meal menus, original itineraries, news clippings from newspapers in both Oregon and Durham, and event programs. Of special interest is that this collection of memorabilia is full of never-before-seen photos, which tend to center around the off-the-field social activities team members enjoyed. People are identified and everything. This is a real historical find for OSU and people who appreciate the history of our university."

Here now is a sampling of items from the collection and an explanation for each:
