Richard Ballard's father,
OSU President Frank L. Ballard, from The Beaver,
1941.
|
World
War II affected everyone on campus and the
losses touched every family at the University,
even to the highest levels.
Richard
Llewellyn Ballard grew up at 3062 Jackson
St. in Corvallis. He was the son of Frank
L. Ballard, who for a long time was an administrator
for the OSC Extension Service and later became
the first graduate of Oregon State (16)
to become the president of the University,
that from 1940-1, when he had to leave the
office due to illness.
Richard
was a student in pre-med while at Oregon State,
a good student, but not active in extracurricular
activities. His picture does not appear in
any of the Beaver yearbooks.
According
to records in the Alumni Associations
historic card collection, Richard enlisted
in the Navy as an officer in Aug., 1943, where
he was assigned to the Naval Air Station in
Atlanta, Ga.
Later
he was sent to Jacksonville, Fla., where on
Nov. 6, 1944, he was killed in a mid-air collision.
