First, some background. For this we need to bring in famed Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne. As it turns out, Rockne taught a two-week coach's clinic at Oregon Agricultural College for each of four summers beginning in 1924.
Bothwell’s three years at OAC coincided with coach Rockne's visits. One day, while watching Bothwell lead a card section rehearsal at Bell Field (today, the location is the Dixon Student Recreation Center), the Notre Dame legend was so taken with the young man’s showmanship, he invited him to serve as an honorary cheerleader for the Irish at their next bowl game.
Bothwell accepted. The following New Year’s Day, 1925, at the Rose Bowl, OAC's enterprising yell king was on the sidelines cheering for Rockne’s boys against Stanford. Notre Dame won the game, 27-10, in what remains the Irish's only post-season appearance in Pasadena.
