“I think it’s a great idea. I think it’s beautiful,” said Jan Hansen, class of 1965 alumnae, as she studied the winning orange, black and white plaid pattern designed by Krisja Lorenson, a fifth-year student majoring in apparel design. Beth Ray, wife of OSU President Ed Ray, concurred. “It’s something else to get people excited about OSU and wearing the colors.”

The "Dog Days" of Autumn

OSU travels to Seattle this weekend to square-off against the University of Washington in a must-win game for the Beavers if Mike Riley's team hopes to remain bowl-eligible. The venue alone should strike mini-terror in the hearts of long-time Oregon State fans. The reason? In the past 50 years, OSU has managed but six wins in Husky Stadium. Prior to last year's 29-14 road win over the Dogs, in which kicker Alexis Serna booted a school-record five field goals, OSU had not won in the Emerald City since 1985.

Here are some other interesting facts about the series:

  • The two schools played for the first time in Corvallis in 1897. The final score was 16-0 in favor of the Oregon Agricultural College "Agrics." Washington was known as the "Sundodgers."
  • This will be the 90th time the two schools have met. UW holds a 57-28-4 advantage. OSU is 16-32-2 in Seattle, 7-18-0 in Corvallis, and 5-7-1 in Portland. The 1914 game, played in Albany (Ore.), ended in a 0-0 tie.
  • In 1985, OSU went to Seattle as 38-point underdogs. The Beavers' stunning 21-20 victory went down as the greatest upset in major college football history (up to that time). No team in Division I had ever defeated an opponent so heavily-favored.
  • From 1906-1920, OSU managed to tally but six points in 12 games against Washington, a field goal in 1912 and another in 1920.
  • OSU's biggest margin of victory came in 1928. The winning score was 29-0. The game was in Seattle.
Beavers celebrate in 1985.
  • Washington's biggest margin came in 1991, when they pounded the Beavers 58-6. The game was in Corvallis.
  • In 1962, Terry Baker's Heisman year, OSU lost at Multnomah Stadium (PGE Park) in Portland, 14-13.
  • OSU's 1957 Rose Bowl team (1956 season) defeated the Huskies in Portland, 28-20.
  • In 2000, Washington defeated OSU 33-30 in Seattle for the Beavers' only loss of the season.
  • The next year, Head Coach Dennis Erickson's worst as a Beaver (5-6), OSU defeated the Huskies 49-24 in Corvallis. It was the most points ever scored against UW by OSU.
