heart Gone and never forgotten: OSU's Mitch Canham lost his mother to drugs, but uses their story to help others
The last thing Oregon State catcher Mitch Canham does before every baseball game is talk to his mother. He stands respectfully, his catcher's helmet and glove on the ground by his right foot, and faces the American flag for the national anthem.
tree House Approves Bill to Speed Logging in Burned Forests
The House on Wednesday approved a bill to speed up the logging of burned forests and planting of new trees after storms and wildfires. The bill, approved 243-182, would order that federal land hit by disasters over more than 1,000 acres be restored within months, rather than years — before insects and rot sets in, diminishing the commercial value of fire-killed timber.

It’s not often that a high school science project ends with the entire class covered in mud, but for the Lebanon High School advanced placement biology class, Tuesday’s exploration of parasitic isopods ended in a lot of gloriously squishy fun.
exclamation point In the Garden: Sick plants? Call a Master Gardener
The stomach flu paid a visit to our home earlier this month, taking our usually energetic daughter to her bed and putting her father and me on a rotation of bedside duties. Fresh ice water? Yes, here I come. Change the channel? Yep, can do that too. A new bowl? Got one here. Sick plants can be that way, too... Diagnosing plant illness can be a tricky business. Oregon State University Master Gardeners get thorough training in diagnosing plant damage and disease.

Dominant pitching is the key
Teams need all-around strength to reach the NCAA softball championship tournament. But they need great pitching to advance. Four aces -- Oregon State's Brianne McGowan, Baylor's Lisa Ferguson, Portland State's Mandy Hill and Nevada's Jordan McPherson -- tuned up Thursday at Oregon State's University Softball Complex for today's opening games of the double-elimination NCAA regional tournament.

The Civil War football game will almost certainly be moved to a Friday afternoon this season to accommodate a live telecast by Fox Sports, officials at the two schools and the Pac-10 confirmed Tuesday. In another football scheduling change for Oregon, the Ducks will kick off at California at 5 p.m. on Oct. 7. That was one of the games ABC listed Tuesday in its expanded "prime time" package of college games to be televised this season.
