Friends, Family Voice Sorrow, Questions Over Cyclist's Death
Jane Vanneman Higdon died doing what she loved. The Eugene triathlete, author and OSU nutrition expert was on her weekly group bike ride Wednesday afternoon when she fell beneath the rear tires of a loaded log truck west of Cottage Grove... She earned her master's degree in human performance from Oregon State University in 1997, and she earned her doctorate in nutrition and food management from Oregon State three years later. She went to work at OSU's Linus Pauling Institute, where she developed the Micronutrient Information Center.

Beer Compound Shows Potent Promise In Prostate Cancer Battle
A chief ingredient in beer shows potent promise in preventing prostate cancer and prostate enlargement, according to a new study by Oregon State University researchers. The research, published in a recent issue of Cancer Letters, shows that xanthohumol, a compound found in hops, inhibits NF-kappaB protein in cells along the surface of the prostate gland, said Emily Ho, assistant professor of nutrition and exercise sciences in OSU's College of Health and Human Sciences and a researcher with OSU's Linus Pauling Institute. |

That Look -- It's Catching! Emotions, Like Germs, Are Easily Transmissible
It takes only a sneeze, a cough or a handshake to spread cold or flu germs from one person to another. But emotions can be transmitted even more easily, faster than the blink of an eye. Research has found that emotions -- both upbeat ones like enthusiasm and joy, and negative ones like sadness, fear and anger -- are easily passed from person to person, often without either party's realizing it. Emotional contagion occurs in a matter of milliseconds, says Elaine Hatfield, a professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii and co-author of "Emotional Contagion" (Cambridge University Press, 1994)... "Communication requires the matching of specific words and contents so [people] can understand each other," explains study co-author Frank Bernieri, an associate professor of psychology at Oregon State University in Corvallis. "So it's not hard to imagine the language driving some part of this contagion process." |

Do you have to be rich to eat organic?
Danita Bergseng, pushing her cart along a supermarket produce aisle in Southwest Portland, sings a common refrain about whether or not to buy organic food. She likes the idea, but balks at the prices."... Organic should be seen, in some senses, as tying one arm behind your back," says Larry Lev, an agricultural economist in Oregon State University's College of Agriculture Sciences. "There are 900 pages of regulations telling you what you can't do." |

Baseball: 'Mr. Consistency' on the ball at Oregon State
Sometime in the eighth or ninth inning of Oregon State's NCAA regional opener against Wright State tonight, the call could come for the left-hander from the bullpen, and he will begin the march to the mound. But the process begins much earlier for Kevin Gunderson. The Beavers' classy closer begins his workweek on Tuesday by throwing 20 to 30 light pitches to a catcher in the bullpen. On Wednesday, he plays long toss with another pitcher, 15 to 20 throws of about 110 feet. On Thursday, he throws another 15 to 20 pitches on flat ground at about 60 percent. Friday? "Game on," says the junior from Central Catholic.
