big wave Off Oregon's coast, researchers hope to pump electricity from surf to turf
Along Oregon's postcard coast, generations have tapped the ocean for its rich fisheries. Now, a new generation wants to tap it for electricity. The goal is to wrest kilowatts from the Pacific Ocean waves by using small floating generators that ride the rolling swells and convert the up-and-down motion into usable volts.
microscope OSU researchers ask why cheddar isn't stinky cheese
Cheddar cheese smells a lot like rotten cabbage, according to a description in a recent textbook. The compound responsible for this offending odor is a sulfur-based gas called methanethiol. Methanethiol occurs naturally in every tissue of our bodies: it is found in our brains and our livers, and it courses through our blood. When we die, the microbial decay of our bodies will produce large quantities of the foul-smelling gas. It is in peat bogs, coal tar, crude oil and animal feces. It is also the main culprit behind bad breath and the smell of flatulence.
tree Biomass-fueled plants planned for Oregon may boost demand for trees, sawmill scraps
Biomass projects planned for Central and Eastern Oregon could mean a high demand in the future for small trees and the woody leftovers from sawmills. Biomass plants use very efficient technologies, which burn the wood at such high temperatures that it creates less smoke and fewer pollutants.
exclamation point 'Water Wars' loom? But none in past 4,500 years
With a steady stream of bleak predictions that "water wars" will be fought over dwindling supplies in the 21st century, battles between two Sumerian city-states 4,500 years ago seem to set a worrying precedent.
football Rotating Oregon State coaches meet when Oregon State hosts Idaho
First, Mike Riley bolted Oregon State for the NFL and Dennis Erickson replaced him. A few years later it was Erickson who was off to the NFL, paving the way for Riley's return to Corvallis. On Saturday night, Erickson returns to Reser Stadium with his new team, the Idaho Vandals - which is also his old team. Is everyone keeping track?
