globe Former separatist becomes governor of Indonesia's Aceh Province
Irwandi Yusuf, 46, who escaped from jail when the 2004 tsunami struck his prison, was sworn in with a copy of Islam's holy Koran above his head, pledging to be loyal to Indonesia's state ideology and constitution. Hundreds of ordinary Acehnese who came to the Parliament building in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh to witness the ceremony applauded after the swearing-in. Muhammad Ma'ruf, the minister of home affairs and overseer of the ceremony, urged Yusuf and his deputy, the former jailed dissident Muhammad Nazar, to work together with the provincial Parliament to lift the welfare of the Acehnese ...Yusuf, a trained veterinarian with a master's degree from Oregon State University in the United States, was arrested in Jakarta in 2003 and sentenced to nine years in prison for his work as an underground campaigner for the separatists.

dollar sign Fortress surges on market debut
Shares in Fortress, the private equity and hedge fund manager, soared on their New York debut on Friday, (Feb. 9,) nearly doubling in early trading before closing up almost 70 per cent. Some compared the event to the dot com frenzy of the late 1990s. The blockbuster start, fueled by investors eager for a slice of one of the hottest sectors in high finance, turned the Fortress founders into billionaires. Fortress's partners – including (1984 OSU business graduate) Wesley Edens, Robert Kauffman and Randal Nardone, its founders – will keep about 78 per cent of the voting rights in the company. Mr Edens' stake was worth about $2.3bn (£1.2bn) at the close of trading.

How are items chosen for Beaver Eclips?
Beaver Eclips is a free service of the OSU Alumni Association. Its main purpose is to provide alumni and friends of OSU with a sense of how Oregon State has been portrayed in the news media over the past week. Items are selected by the staff of the Oregon Stater and by other OSUAA employees. Inclusion of an item in Eclips means only that we think it's interesting and/or important, and does not constitute an endorsement of its point of view or its journalistic accuracy.
