An increased obsession with self?
A risk for infidelity, lack of emotional warmth, dishonesty, overly-controlling and violent behaviors - these are some of the symptoms listed for a narcissistic person according to an Associated Press article stating that college students are more narcissistic than ever. Published on Feb. 27, the article reported on a national study of 16,475 college students between 1982 and 2006. The students completed an evaluation called the Narcissistic Personality Inventory. |

Making holistic admissions work
In holistic admissions, colleges evaluating applicants replace grids of grades and test scores with more individualized reviews of would-be students. The practice is most commonly associated with liberal arts colleges or with public universities at which affirmative action has been banned. Oregon State University is in neither category, but over the last six years it has moved to holistic admissions - with success that is attracting other colleges' attention. |

Freeing minds behind bars
Tom is a convicted murderer. And a college student. And he's sitting between two female students from Oregon State University who had never been behind bars until two months ago. "They were scared to death when they came in," says Tom, 41, who is among 15 inmates who share a classroom with 15 OSU students for three hours every Wednesday night at the Oregon State Penitentiary. "They're to the point now where some of them are going to cry when we graduate next week. |

OSU cruises in home opener
Goss Stadium showed well Thursday for Oregon State's baseball home opener: The FieldTurf infield and state-of-the art scoreboard were obvious improvements. On the field, not much has changed. Timely hitting, strong pitching, flawless defense. "Pretty much an Oregon State game," shortstop Darwin Barney said after the eighth-ranked Beavers posted a 9-2 victory against Evansville (Ind.) before a slightly less than capacity crowd of 1,907.
