  Notables

James Clinton 'Clink' Davis, Nov. 12, 2000, Portland. He was past president of the Easter Seal Society and president of the OSU Alumni Association from 1952 to 1953. His wife, Ashby Rauch Davis, '39, died in June of 2000.
David C. England, '40, Jan. 3, Corvallis. He taught in the animal science department from 1956 to 1990 and managed the OSU swine program. He received the Oregon Pork Producers Distinguished Service Award, the American Society of Animal Science Fellow Award and the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science Distinguished Service Award.
Edward E. Hardin, Nov. 29, 2000, Corvallis. He was an associate professor in the crop sciences department, director of the seed laboratory, superintendent of the Hyslop Experimental Farm and acting head of the crop sciences department. He was chairman of the Western Forest Seed Council and president of the Association of Official Seed Analysts. He was named Oregon Seed Trade Association Man of the year in 1981 and 1982. He retired in 1988.
Richard E. Hatchard, '47, Nov. 17, 2000, Portland. As Oregon's chief air quality control officer from 1952 to 1964, he wrote Portland's air-pollution ordinance helping to develop state air quality regulations. He served as chief of the state's Office of Protective Health Service and as a consultant for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the World Health Organization and the Mexican government.
Norm Hoffman, '63, '65, March 14, Bakersfield, Calif. He was a Bakersfield College professor and award winning cyclist. He was the NCAA champion in the half mile at Oregon State in 1963.
Alvin M. Leach, '43, '59, Jan. 17, Salem. He was dean of community services at Chemeketa Community College in Salem for 18 years. He received the Outstanding Educator of America Award in 1970 and Man of the Year Award for the Northwest Region in 1976.
Gregory M. Merritt, '68, Oct. 19, 2000, Prineville. During his lifetime he served on many boards and committees including Oregon-California Marketing, Far West Spearmint Marketing, Oregon Essential Oil Growers, Oregon Farm Bureau, and Pioneer Memorial Hospital. FSK.
Mary Bartle Pearmine, '69, Feb. 12, Salem. She was the first woman commissioner of Marion County, serving from 1991 to 1998. KAQ
Clarence W. Richen, '35, Dec. 6, 2000, Portland. He was a key official in the region's forest-products industry from the 1940s until his retirement in 1977. After retirement he chaired the Portland chapter of the National Alliance of Businessmen, devoted to helping find employment for disadvantaged youths, Vietnam veterans and former inmates. He also served on the board of the Navajo Nation's forest-products industry in Arizona.
Andrew V. Smith, '50, Feb. 13, Bellevue, Wash. He was past president of Pacific Northwest Bell and retired as a vice president of US West in 1989. He was past chair of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce board of trustees, a member of the Seattle University board of trustees and a University of Washington regent.
Paul H. Weswig, Dec. 27, 2000, Corvallis. He taught in the department of agricultural chemistry between 1941 and 1978. He was a nutrition consultant with the National Institutes of Health, belonged to several national and international professional nutrition societies and received an outstanding service award from the Oregon Academy of Science. He was a district chairman and lieutenant governor in the Pacific Northwest District of the Kiwanis Club.
