He was a consultant for NASA and owned six patents in the field of automatic flight control systems and landing systems. Buxton Residence Hall, on the OSU campus, was named for his grandfather, Austin Buxton, who had served as a member of the Board of Regents and the Oregon State Forestry Board.

Bonnie C. Templeton, ’64, Glendale, Calif. She was a pioneering female botanist who served as curator of botany for the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History from 1929 to 1970. In 1964 she received her doctorate in botany at OSU. Templeton’s donations to the OSU department of botany and plant pathology have resulted in the creation of three work and conference rooms,
and endowments for graduate student research and maintenance of the department’s teaching collection. The first Dr. Bonnie C. Templeton Lecture was delivered at the LaSells Stewart Center on May 2.

Merritt Truax dies
Merritt Wallace Truax , ’34, died June 1 at his home after a short illness.
He owned several petroleum-based businesses in Oregon and had been president of the Oregon Petroleum Marketers Association and a member of the Goodrich Dealer Council.

He and his wife, Aileen, contributed to the construction of the Merritt Truax Indoor Athletic Facility at OSU. He served on the Salem Hospital Board for many years, was a founder and the initial secretary/ treasurer of Illahe Hills Country Club and was founder of Salem Development Company.
Surviving are his wife, Aileen; daughter, Sharon Truax Douglas; son, Michael Merritt Truax; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Former football coach succumbs

LaVerne H. "Kip" Taylor, Oregon State’s head football coach from 1949 to 1954, died July 17 in Ann Arbor, Mich. at age 94. Taylor had also scored the first-ever touchdown at Michigan Stadium while playing for the Wolverines in 1927.
Taylor’s teams had a 20-36-0 record in his six seasons guiding the Beavers, but that included a 5-1 record against Oregon. He later managed the Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore., and the University of Michigan Golf Course before retiring in 1972.
